What Is Spatial Metadata? Examples of descriptive data contained in a typical database for a building, e.g. hotel, in a local government area are lot number, lot size, lot owner, building owner, building material, year built, assessed value, number of stories, number of guest rooms, restaurants, meeting rooms, list of staff, and so on. Metadata describe these data about the hotel in yet more general and less detailed terms. Thus, metadata are frequently referred to as data about data. Data about the hotel are then grouped ... http://www.muni.org/... /Metadata%20Management%20in%20GIS.htm |

| 2: | GIS: Metadata Repository: How to Contribute Metadata GIS Metadata Metadata Home Page How to Contribute Metadata to the GIS Metadata Repository Before submitting metadata for the first time, agencies should register with the NYS GIS Clearinghouse. Each agency will be assigned an account, which should be referenced whenever metadata records are submitted in the future. Agencies may create metadata records for submission to the GIS Metadata Repository in one of three ways: Via an online form. Electronic forms allow users to enter their metadata online and submit it directly to the Clearinghouse. There are two forms, with different levels of detail; however, both forms produce metadata records that are shorter than the full Content Standards. The only way to add information that does not fit into one of the Metadata Entry System fields would be to include it in a free text field like "Supplemental Information". Metadata Entry System online form (sample): Formerly called Metadata Lite, this is the shortest format for creating ... http://www.nysgis.state.ny.us/repository/howto.htm |

| 3: | GIS Metadata GIS Metadata The following section contains information about the GIS data found on this CD. Referred to as "metadata," this information is listed in alphabetical order by file name and describes each data set in both general and technical terms. Although FGDC compliant metadata is available for highly technical users, ARC provides the metadata on this CD in a more user-friendly format. With regard to terminology, GIS data sets are known by many different names, such as layers, coverages, themes, etc. For the purpose of this metadata, we use the term "Theme" to refer to the data sets described in each particular paragraph. All of the GIS data sets are provided in a Geographic coordinate system using the NAD83 datum and decimal degree units of measurement. This "projection" is used for three different formats of the data: Themes, Arc/Info export files (E00s), and ArcView Shapefiles. For specific information about Themes, such as source and date, refer to the various paragraphs ... http://www.atlanta-data.com/metadata.html |

| 4: | Active Metadata: Using Metadata to Drive Applications for GIS Data Access and Analysis Active Metadata: Using Metadata to Drive Applications for GIS Data Access and Analysis ABSTRACT In many organizations, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) dwells on the edge of mainstream information technology. GIS remains a separate entity, not just another analytical tool. The biggest hurdle to integrating spatial analysis with other systems is data. One of the most annoying problems facing all users of information technology today is getting a handle on data, but for GIS users, it is an everyday struggle. Because spatial data is different, only the creators of data can hope to comprehend attributes. In order to capture and circulate knowledge of data, developing and using metadata seems to be the answer. While metadata can help, its main product is a paper document, which must be stored, searched and referenced manually. This paper will outline an approach to make metadata a more useful and integral part of spatial data analysis.
