Figure 16.6 - The appearance of small isolated hamlets on Lobo Mesa late in the prehistory of the area was once difficult to explain. The cost-surface analyses, however, reveal that these hamlets correspond with points where numerous cost-paths optimizing travel between communities cross one another. Perhaps these hamlets emerged to take advantage of increasing interaction between Chaco communities. Note that formal roadways are not associated with these optimal cost-paths. The hamlet on the left is northeast of Coolidge, while the one on the right is north of Tse Bee Kintsoh.
