Suggested Travel Itinerary:
Arrive Santa Barbara, Sunday, 28 July
Depart Santa Barbara, Saturday, 3 August

There is no UCSB shuttle from the SB airport to the campus housing (Santa Ynez Apartments).

Transportation recommendation -- from Santa Barbara Airport to the Santa Ynez Apartments (6650 El Colegio Road, Goleta, California 93117):

This is a very short ride from the airport to the apartments, and we recommend the SuperRide shuttle (683-9636)--no advance reservations necessary...very convenient and less expensive than taxis (usually large white van, big blue lettering on sides and top "SuperRide"). There is usually a shuttle waiting at the airport for deplaning passengers, so you may not need to call for service. Check first before calling them (there is a courtesy phone in the baggage claim area). Re: fare,
SuperRide is usually much cheaper than the regular taxi fee. Also, it's convenient and a less expensive to schedule a round-trip with them. SuperRide is a better deal! (If you can't go with SuperRide, Blue Dolphin Taxi is good also.)

Accommodations
Unless you state otherwise on your Personal Data Form, I assume that each of you will accept our offer to stay in the UCSB-owned Santa Ynez Apartments, near the campus and within walking distance. The cost of the six night stay (Sunday-Friday) is extremely reasonable at $266.00 per person. This amount will be deducted from your $500 CSISS scholarship, and a balance check in the amount of $234 will be remitted to you either at the end of the workshop or later this summer.
(Note: For non-U.S. citizens, the balance will be processed for you via a Travel Expense Voucher to be detailed later.)

Details are as follows:

Check-in time/date: begins 12 noon, Sunday, 28 July
Checkout time/date: must vacate by 12 noon, Saturday, 3 August
Place: Santa Ynez Apartment Complex
Address: 6650 El Colegio Road, Goleta, California 93117

Check-in at Santa Ynez Apartments: The front desk will be open for check-in very, very late on Sunday. Check-in will stay open until at least 1 am, Monday morning. So no fear if you have a late flight into SB airport. (see map websites listed below)

Campus Parking: Permits are required in all areas of campus Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. No permit is needed if parked in metered spaces (but the meter must be fed). Short-term permits may be purchased for $5/day (soon to go up to $7/day) at both of the Kiosk entrances to campus and at the Parking Services Office. Cash payment only accepted at kiosks. More information can be found at the UCSB Parking Services website:
http://www.park.ucsb.edu/parking.html

Directions: From northbound Highway 101, take the Los Carneros Road exit. Turn left (heading in a southerly direction). Los Carneros will dead-end into El Colegio. Turn right (heading west). Santa Ynez will be the apartments on your right.

These will be shared accommodations, two people per apartment. Each 2-bedroom Santa Ynez Apartment is furnished with the following items:

Living and Dining Room - Couch and chair, dining table with four chairs, end table, and one lamp.
Bedrooms (2 per apt.) -Two single beds with full linen and bedding*, double closet, two desks with bookcases, and two dressers. (Beds are made up once a week.)
Kitchen -Refrigerator, stove, table service for four, including cutlery, cups, plates, and one tea kettle.
Bathrooms (1 and 1/2 per apt.) -: Shower curtain, towels, washcloths, hand soap, and toilet paper. Towels are changed twice per week.
* only one blanket/bed is supplied.

Things to consider bringing:
1) phone -- Each apartment has one active phone line. In order to activate this line, you must bring your own phone, cord, and calling card.
2) alarm clock
3) extra clothes hangers (UCSB may provide a few but you may want to bring extra)
4) sweater or jacket

Meals are on your own -- with the exception of a Thursday evening BarBQ we will host at the BEACH!

Workshop Class Location/Time
Please report to the first class on Monday, 29 July, 8:30am, Ellison Hall, Room 2620. The campus map website is listed below.

Workshop dress: Bring lots of shorts and comfortable cotton shirts -- workshop is casual dress. But the classroom and labs (and evenings!) get cold sometimes, so bring a sweater/jacket.

Santa Barbara weather: usually temperate during the day (in the high 60s to high 70s), but rather chilly in the evenings. Be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket (depending on your personal thermometer!).

We have an exciting week planned and are looking forward to meeting each of you!
